In Paul’s letters, he often emphasizes the importance of the spiritual gift of teaching.  Paul’s respect for teaching is very evident in 1 Corinthians 12:28 when he says, “And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, administrating, and various kinds of tongues.”

Of course, the Body of Christ requires all spiritual gifts. But in all seriousness, what would you choose if given the choice between miracles, gifts of healing, or teaching?  Who would choose teaching over miracles?  I wouldn’t!  Yet Paul says that God has appointed teachers before those who work miracles or those with gifts of healing.

When we think of Jesus, we are often drawn to his miracles and gifts of healing.  We think of him feeding the 5,000, walking on the sea, healing the man born blind and raising Lazarus from the dead.  But Jesus Himself was very often addressed as “Teacher” or “Rabbi”.  And people were just as amazed by his teachings as they were by his miracles.

After recording three entire chapters of Jesus’ teachings, Matthew’s Gospel says, “And when Jesus finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at his teaching, for he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.”

It’s obvious, teaching is important.  That is why we’d like to lift up those who have agreed to teach for the upcoming school year.  Their willingness to use their spiritual gift of teaching is a great blessing to all of those in the Body of Christ.
